April 20, 2013 (Braselton, GA) – Joel Miller brought home Mazda’s first victory using the SkyActiv Diesel Technology aboard the SpeedSource prepared Mazda 6 GX race car at Road Atlanta during the Grand Am Rolex Championship weekend. Joel had a new co-driver being Andrew Carbonell who started the race. Qualifying was set via points and the first stint from Andrew lasted roughly 50 minutes before turning over the reins to Miller for the remaining period of the 2 hours and 45 minute race.
Joel started his stint in the 3rd position in class and quickly caught the second place car. Due to the nature of the other manufacturer who was competing against the Mazda’s in class Miller had to time the overtaking pass perfectly for the braking zone. This occurred going into T1 and by the end of the following lap a sizable gap between Miller and the 3rd place car was apparent. During the midpoint of the race Joel set into his rhythm and started clicking away consistent laps while trailing the sister SpeedSource #70 SkyActiv Diesel.
Miller was able to close the gap during the final pit stop for fuel to the lead car. Once the running order sorted itself out after the pit stops Joel found himself right on the bumper of his teammate the #70 car. Ultimately, Miller crossed the finish line in 1st place giving Mazda, its SkyActiv Diesel Technology, and SpeedSource its first victory in the new GX class using the new Mazda 6.
"Being a part of Mazda's SkyActiv Diesels first Victory in motorsports is special. The new Mazda 6 prepared by SpeedSource ran perfectly during the Grand Am Rolex event at Road Atlanta. The torque of the SkyActiv Diesel pulled up the elevation changes around the circuit so strongly and the Mazda 6 handled beautifully especially in the tricky esses sector. I am happy to have our partners on board for this historic victory in Mazda's history such as VisitFlorida.com, Castrol Motor Oils, and my co-driver Andrew Carbonell,” stated Miller during podium activities. “The SpeedSource crew has worked so hard over the past months and this victory also shows their hard work and dedication to the goal that Mazda has.”
Joel would like to thank VisitFlorida.com, SpeedSource, and Mazda with its SkyActiv Technology in the new Mazda 6 for the great package capable of winning the race at Road Atlanta. Also, he would like to thank his personal sponsors such as OMP, USANA, Oakley, DreamCars Automotive from Hesperia, and the various individuals who have helped along the way with his career.
